Targeted results

In the summer of 2023, Children’s HeartLink had an open VP of Development position with an annual fundraising gala just months away. I was welcomed by a wonderful team to assist with board engagement and solicit major donors and institutional givers. The organization met its gala's fundraising goal ($650K - a 14% increase) with seven new sponsors (43 total - a 20% increase) ahead of the prior year.

Ashland Productions hired me in October 2023 to quickly develop and implement a year-end fundraising plan. With no time to spare we launched a robust Give to the Max Day appeal that saw an 81% increase in donations over 2022. A year-end direct mail campaign was then revised and expanded, resulting in a four-fold growth in fundraising with average donations increasing 65%, buoyed by first-time donors comprising 35% of all individual supporters.

Kind words

"I have worked with Larry for over ten years. In that time, he has continually leaned into and shown up in spaces filled with deep passion and tough conversations. Throughout the years, Larry has consistently made tremendous impacts in community engagement and health equity. Larry has, throughout the years, been both a colleague, a mentor, and a loyal and authentic friend. People like Larry Silber don't come along often, and I am proud to work beside him in numerous capacities."

-Rae Blaylark, Sickle Cell Foundation of Minnesota

"When things fall apart, Larry sees challenge as adventure, and thinks outside the box to solve impossible problems. His ability to lead a human cadre through a turbulent and ever-changing environment is tantamount to miraculous. In our time working together, we were often called on to adjust campaigns to accommodate unforeseen circumstances, and in doing so we learned from successes and failures in ways that shaped organizational policy for the better. I adored working with Larry, and what I learned from him in our time together comprised elements of leadership, crisis management, customer relationship management, and maintaining integrity under pressure. He is truly a gifted leader, a skilled creative, and a unique thinker."

- Liz Star, Communications Consultant

"Larry possesses a rare ability to be both a big picture thinker and one who eagerly rolls up his sleeves to help the team meet its objectives. He is a great verbal communicator and a clear and concise writer, too. Larry has a terrific creative sense. He's a diplomat without portfolio and moves with ease, great effect and impact between the C-level and those on the front line."

-Tom Whelan, Factorum Wheels Brewing Co.

"When I was the Executive Director at Community Health Charities, Larry was the Chair of our Executive Director's Council and he also sat on our board. Larry has a great ability to engage and present in front of a large group. He is a very good leader and has an amazing scope of ideas when it comes to engagement. Larry is very kind and a hard worker; you can tell he is passion about whatever he is involved in."

- Jenna Berneck, Minneapolis Foundation

About

I grew up in Washington, DC and came to Saint Paul to attend college. Like a lot of Macalester graduates, I stayed in Minnesota, having fallen in love with the progressive and seasonal climates.

After earning my MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, I returned to the Twin Cities. My career path includes Carmichael Lynch, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, Memorial Blood Centers, and Hennepin Healthcare.

I also ran my own small advertising agency with big results for the Minnesota Zoo, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, WCCO-AM, and other wonderful clients.

My amazing wife, two rescue golden retrievers, and I live in South Minneapolis near Lake Nokomis. You can often find me riding a bike.

Silber Consulting is an Associate Member of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. I also serve on the Executive Advisory Committee of the Sickle Cell Foundation of Minnesota.

Building Strong Philanthropic Relationships

Impact: Current and past assignments

Children’s HeartLink: This international nonprofit needed additional bandwidth ahead of its annual gala. I am supporting the development committee, assisting staff, working with board leadership, and engaging key strategic partners and major donors. This assignment runs through October 31, 2023.

Hennepin Healthcare Research Institute: Navigating a matrix development position with Hennepin Healthcare Foundation, Larry worked with board leadership to obtain multi-year funding from 3M for an innovative post-doc program that creates opportunities for women and minority biomedical researchers.

Firefighters for Healing: Collaborating with this vital third party ally nonprofit, Larry closed a $300K campaign for an offsite transitional healing center in under 30 days.

Seegene: An email inquiry South Korea’s leading molecular diagnostics company led to a $500K in-kind gift of greatly needed patient testing supplies from Seegene USA during the height of the covid pandemic.

Fred C. and Katherine B. Andersen Foundation: A conversation with a pediatric hematologist over coffee led to a compelling funding request. Months later, Memorial Blood Centers established the nation’s first donor registry for newborns with neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, a rare and often fatal blood disorder.

Sickle Cell Foundation of Minnesota and Melanin: An exploratory meeting at Cookie Cart in North Minneapolis fostered a partnership between the Sickle Cell Foundation of Minnesota and Melanin in Motion to establish an annual World Sickle Cell Day Celebration and Fundraiser. Corporate supporters have included American Red Cross, Memorial Blood Centers, Hennepin Healthcare, Children’s Minnesota, and Be The Match.
